night: chance of snow late low: 11-17 winds: w 5-10 alo: 13 dbq: 11 iow: 15 thanks kaj. this morning, some presidential candidates are celebrating their wins after the new hampshire primary. as polls predicted, donald trump and bernie sanders won last night. presidential candidates are looking forward this morning. republicans have a primary vote in south carolina on the 20th. nevada democrats caucus that same day. republicans in nevada caucus on the 23rd. and the democratic primary for south carolina is on the 27th. it comes to a peak on march 1st --super tuesday-- with 14 republican and 11 democratic primaries or caucuses. for the republicans in the new hampshire primary, trump won with 35 point 1 percent support. while ohio governor john kasich pulled out an impressive second place finish with 15 point 9 percent. ted cruz was third with 11 point

"maybe just maybe we're turning the page on a dark part of american politics because tonight, the light overcame the darkness of negative campaigning." " on the democratic side, vermont senator bernie sanders overwhelmingly won with 60 percent. clinton got 38 point 4 percent of the vote. he is going home to new jersey to reevaluate his campaign. he finished 6th in this primary. students at the university of iowa have seen more alerts from the school -- as the u of i issued its 3rd and 4th warnings this year about possible sexual misconduct on campus. federal law requires the university to issue the warnings, but the one issued monday night didn't give much information. it simply said university reports of 2 possible sexual assaults last weekend. one was from an east side residence hall on saturday, the other was in a west side hall on sunday. in both cases the alleged victims police. the warnings didn't even give the names of the residence halls. the university's public safety department says the vague information is not intended to generate leads for police. instead, it's part of an overall plan to make the community safer. officials say the idea of timely

about possible sexual misconduct reminds people not to be afraid to report incidents or to seek help. " it does help to remind people this type of incident does occur and it when it says the suspect was known to the survivor it's helpful to remind people to confront that myth it's not the person who jumps out of the bushes to hurt somebody." university police say the school could face a 35- thousand dollar federal fine if it doesn't issue alerts in a timely manner about possible sexual misconducts on campus. the "crime alert" the university sent out monday night is different from a hawk alert, which to the campus. last november, the university sent out a hawk alert about a man who was groping women. police later arrested 32 year old adam weinstein on charges of sexual abuse, assault, and harassment. he's scheduled to go to trial in may. and remember, whenever you see news 319-365-9999. you can also send pictures and

some cedar rapids high school students are travelling to des moines this morning. they're planning to talk to lawmakers about increasing education funding. last month the republican- controlled house approved a 2 percent increase in funding for fiscal 2017. but the democratic- majority senate says that's not enough, and passed a 4 percent increase yesterday. lawmakers expect the issue to go back and forth between the chambers before it heads to special legislative meetings. kcrg-tv 9's brea love is live in the newsroom. brea, school officials say this a chance for students to have a real world experience? chris, nicole, stepping up to a podium and advocating for change can be a nerve racking thing to do for a teenager. but, some of them have accepted the challenge for a greater cause. when students found out how the budget could affect the programs and elective classes, they say it opened their eyes. they want to urge lawmakers to think about the importance of investing in iowa's youth. students were taught how to make a persuasive

school officials have asked students to share their stories, and show lawmakers the kind of impact their education has made. "as you think about the experiences you have had in cr, and hopefully they have been great. just tell that story and that you'd be concerned that there would be any reduction in funding that would jeopardize any of those types of experiences " officials say only a couple students have been to the capitol, so the trip will double as a great experience no matter what the outcome is. students will load up buses and head to des monies at 8:15 this morning. chris and nicole, back to you. thanks a lot brea. starting next school year, students and teachers in dubuque will once again have spring break. the school board decided monday night to set the break for the entire week of march 13th, 2017. dubuque schools used to have spring break between 2012 and 2014. but parents complained the break was leading to child care issues, so the district removed spring break from the calendar. now, after surveying parents, administrator s say the majority want a spring break.

initiative is hosting a town hall today in cedar rapids. the town hall is at 7 o'clock tonight at the cedar rapids public library. the group will talk about the national and local trends of heroin. the u-s attorney kevin techau will join local law enforcement in leading the talk. some republican lawmakers in iowa are supporting an expansion of the state's cannabis oil law. house commerce committee chairman peter crownie says he wants a law that creates a whole system for medical marijuana in iowa. right now, iowa law allows patients with severe epilepsy use cannabis oil. but you can't buy it, produce it or transport it in the state. the new legislation would allow more products and patients, but it still would prohibit smoking marijuana for medical purposes. it's unclear what support this bill will get from party leaders. a former iowa governor is getting involved in the opposition to the state's push to shift medicaid patients to managed care companies. chet culver hosted 2 medicaid town-hall meetings in eastern iowa yesterday he said he's disappointed to see how politics

today is ash wednesday -- the start of lent -- when some christians give up a guilty pleasure. some people in eastern iowa celebrated the last day of indulgence -- mardi gras -- yesterday. 19:39:18 music playing st. andrew presbyterian church in iowa city brought in a band for its celebrations. the church also served stacks of pancakes - and a mardi gras cake - to mark the day. the church hoped to attract people of all ages. kids played games and listened to music at the church. a cajun restaurant that recently moved from oxford to iowa city got an early start on a grand re-opening. augusta is scheduled to open formally for business tomorrow. but the owners opened up yesterday for a "fat tuesday" feast. the

aviation administration ... drones are seeing strides forward in use after registration was opened at the end of last year.. in agriculture.. they are a new tool in a large tool box for conservation.. particularly in using information with other precision ag machines. many drones in ag are looking towards mapping as the next best way to be more precise. aaron sheller.. owner of precision drone.. says taking pictures from the sky becomes his roadmap for conserving his resources. he calls it a prescription based approach.. when he can see crop health problems in pictures. "once i have that, i can load it into a google based viewer, such as an iphone or ipad, walk out through google earth, drop pins, label those problems, bring that back to my office, make a prescription based solution. so i'm only applying those chemicals where they need to be. i'm only applying the fertilizer where it needs to be. i'm only applying that pesticide

sheller says on his farm, he can pay for a drone in 250 acres of work with correct use.. he says on other farms.. he's seen returns of 20 dollars an acre.. to 75 dollars an acre with full integration of information management. he says growers are used to yield maps or fertility maps... drones give in-season maps to use.. "how can you not think that this is the future. because ultimately we have to feed the world. and ultimately we have to do it without negatively impacting the environment and with the mississippi river dead zone being where it's at and everyone continually scrutinizing us as farmers about how much nutrients we use per acre, i think it's very vital and very important that we put those nutrients exactly where they need to be so the crop can uptake it and we can achieve maximum success." sheller says he's excited that there's more interest on the federal level in getting drones to growers.. but they would like to see more clarification and ease of entry for new drone operators. there's more information on how to use drones in ag on sheller's website.. precision

com. ---- a new production report was out yesterday from the u-s-d-a.. but it didn't appear to be a market mover.. i spoke with analyst brian roach.. and the answer has to do.. with south america.. "not a lot of big changes, i guess probably how you have to look at it is we're not seeing much of a reduction in south american supplies at all." "we had hoped that maybe we'd see some problems in weather and maybe draw down the crop size in south america to start off our growing season here in the u.s. but we're not going to start that way with brazil's corn crop getting 3-4 million tons larger, it's just setting the tone for supplies to be not a whole lot less if anything larger from south america here as we move into spring time in the u.s." "i think you have to look at cattle following the macros, stock markets, etc. energy markets. and so, when we came into monday we had a limit down move in the live and the feeders we're actually back in green territory

"he's an exciting candidate, he talks favorably about education and a lot of other issues that are very important to me." "it's been awesome all day. i teach, and being able to encourage my students to vote and get out, and so many of them knowing my position saying yeah i'm going to vote for bernie too, so it's really great." "we are going now to south carolina, we are going to win in south carolina, i love you all thank you very much, thank you. cedar rapids students are heading to des moines this morning to talk to lawmakers. this group of dozens of high schools students is going to lobby legislators in hopes of increasing school funding. last month, the republican- controlled house approved a 2% increase in funding for fiscal 2017. but the democratic- majority senate says that's not enough, and passed a 4% increase yesterday. lawmakers expect the issue to go back and forth between the chambers before it heads to special legislative meetings. kcrg-tv 9's brea love joins us at the desk this morning. brea, students are saying this a chance to show lawmakers what they need... that's right. until recently, students say they didn't fully understand how a school's budget worked. but, once they learned that some of the program could be cut, some decided to speak up. students will load charter buses later this morning in route to the capitol. there they will stand in front of iowa legislators telling their stories and why they want them to make education funding a priority. students say the programs that are in jeopardy at their

for their future. they want to show lawmakers how important it is to invest in the next generation. more career and technical options is tough without voters in waterloo rejected a $47 million bond that would have earmarked most of the money for exactly that. branstad says working with existing resources is a reality with the state's budget. 12:26:54 "even with existing facilities, there's a lot you can do. and also partnering with the community colleges, like hawkeye, as with the private sector business, we just need to be smart about the way we work collaborate and utilize the resources we have." branstad's conference to address those collaboration issues is set to happen april 19 in des moines. it's called the future ready iowa summit. some parents in the iowa city school district say walking isn't possible for their kids after the district cut free busing for them for next school year. the district says it's saving $400,000 by doing so. " i'm surprised that the decision was made, the money concerns are real for the district and they have to make some hard choices, but i'm confused as to

opposed to one that would have less of an impact on some families and some kids. " the district is cutting busing for kids who live within 2 miles of 9 elementary schools. it says part of its plan will be to increase busing in some lower income areas. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a tama county man will be sentenced in april for helping his mother kill his wife 3 years ago. yesterday, a newton jury convicted 40 year old dustin jefferson for aiding and abetting first degree murder. this was jefferson's third trial for his wife's death. the first ended during jury selection, and the second ended in a mistrial. authorities say 32 year old kerry o'clair jefferson died from a stab wound to the neck in september 2013. police found her body when they went to a home in tama to arrest dustin jefferson on a separate charge. in 2014, a jury found jefferson's mother,

she's now serving a life sentence. testimony during that trial implicated dustin jefferson's involvement in the murder. two local photographer s are concerned about people being reckless around trains in cedar rapids. alex jordan and lance schaeffer are train enthusiasts, who have spent hours recording video of trains. they say they have captured many people at local crossings breaking the law when trains approach. some of the worst offenders are pedestrians. one group of runners missed a speeding train by about 4 seconds. this back in august. "i don't want to be the person to have to call 911 if you get hit. or if you almost get hit and the train has to go into an emergency. i don't want you family friends and engineer a conductor to go through that." the safety manager for cedar rapids and iowa city railway says employees and engineers are told to keep an eye out for people illegally crossing railroad tracks. they turn over

yesterday after another bumpy day on wall street. and oil prices continue to drop as global excess becomes a major concern. u-s benchmark crude fell more than five and a half percent yesterday to end the day just under 28 dollars a barrel. the international energy agency says supply is set to outpace demand this year. global excess supply could reach two million barrels per day during the first quarter. those falling oil prices could mean drivers in parts of the country could see 99 cent per gallon gas. gas prices are already the cheapest in more than 12 years. experts say 99 cent gas prices will be isolated due to the regional refining costs, oil inventories and shipping. and it's official, fans of disney's "frozen" -- the record-breaking animated movie -- will soon have a broadway version. the new "frozen broadway" twitter account made the announcement. the show has a target opening in the spring of 20- 18.
